Vijayadasami celebration at playschool

Mahima Cultural Center, preschool and playschool located in Mylapore celebrated vijayadasami by organising akshara byasam (rice writing) ceremony for its school children.

The children sat on their parents laps and wore on the nellu (rice).

Scouting camp for Bharat Scouts and Guides

The South Madras (Chennai) Bharat Scouts and Guides, Mylapore had organised a scout and guides pioneering camp at Besant Scout Camping Centre.

Students were guides in knotting, lashing and tent pitching session. In the evening students participated in the campfire and presented songs and dramas.

S. Shriram Dist Secretary was the chief guest for the campfire.

Students also had the opportunity to do the gateway, Monkey Bridge, signaling tower and tree shelter.

Students of Mylapore dance school perform at Sri Karaneeswarar Temple

A Bharathnatyam performance was presented by the students of Mahalakshmi Natyalaya, Mylapore at Sri Karaneeswarar Temple.

The students of this school have been performing here for the last 25 years during Navaratri season.

The gurus K. Mahalakshmi and G. Narendran were honoured with the 'acharyas' award.

Mahalaya Amavasaya

People take part in rituals on the East, West and South banks of the tank of Sri Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Mylapore on October 15 morning.

Being Mahalaya Amavasaya, it was time to offer prayers for the departed.

Thousands of people were seen in the temple tank to observe this ritual.

New shops on the road at the entrance of the tank were selling flowers, plaintain leaves, and other items for the ritual. (more…)

Sringeri Jagadguru visits Kalyan Nagar Association

Kalyan Nagar Association (KNA) on evening of October 9.

The swagatha pathrika in Sanskrit was read out by T. S. Viswanathan. He spoke on the various activities taking place at the premises of KNA.

The Acharya rendered his anugraha bashanam.

"His Holiness explained the selfless activities that every individual should perform and said that none should take pride in their activities except place them at the feet of Almigthy"  says one of the members of Kalyan Nagar Association Committee.

Prasadams were distributed to people assembled here.


Students of Sri Karpagavalli Vidyalaya spend a day with the police

88 children and 5 teachers from Sree Karpagavalli Vidhyalaya School, Mangolai attended an awareness program conducted by the Mylapore Police on Oct.6.

The students from classes 5 to 8 were briefed on the work done by the police at Mylapore Police Station.

The students and teachers then distributed food to about 30 inmates of "Annai Illam" near Sree Kapaleeswarar Temple.

This camp is part of the Joy of Giving week, says Latha a teacher at this school.

Music and Charitable Trust to be inaugurated

Archana Music and Charitable Trust, Mylapore will be inaugurated at Ragasudha hall, Luz Avenue.

The music trust will be inaugurated on Oct.13 and the charitable trust on Oct.14 at 6 p.m.

S. S. Rajasekar, Chairman, Kalakendira Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai and Mohan Parasaran, Additional Solicitor General, Govt. of India, New Delhi will be the chief guests.

Memorial dance performances

Lalith Kala Mandhir, a fine arts centre is organising memorial dance performances

On Oct.10, thirupugazh maalai will be presented in memory of M. Muthukrishnan and  'Krishnanjali', a dance performance in memory of N. Pattabhiraman on Oct.11.

Both the events will take place at 6 p.m. at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore.

Sringeri Jagadguru to visit R. A. Puram temple and Mandaveli

Sringeri Jagadguru is scheduled to visit,  Sri Sharada Temple at Sringeri Mutt Road,  R. A. Puram on Oct.5 at 5.30 p.m. Golden Ratha Utsavam will take place at the temple premises. Open to all.

His Holiness is visiting Kalyana Nagar Association premises, on Oct.9 at 4.45p.m. He is the 36th Pontiff of Sringeri Mutt. Previous Mahasannidhanam Sri Abinava Teertha Mahasannidhanam along with the present Pontiff have blessed the Association by their visit on December 1977.

Cuban film festival has been organised at Russian Centre of Science and Culture.

Movie ‘The Booby Prize’ will be screened at 6.15 p.m. and ‘The Annunciation’ at 8 p.m.

Theresa is 100. Her egg and milk mix every morning has sustained her.

Theresa Sundarambal Thambuswami of San Thome turned 100 on September 24. And it was a day for her and her family to thank the Lord. Her relatives hosted a special birthday celebration on Sept. 23 at the church hall in K.M.N. Street, R. A. Puram.

Over 70 family members attended this special celebration. Alongside was her sister from Puducherry. Theresa cut a cake and the nuns of a local convent sang songs for her.

G. Kasturi, former Editor of The Hindu passes away

G. Kasturi, former Editor of The Hindu and former Managing Director of Kasturi and Sons Limited, the proprietors of The Hindu Group publications passed away on September 21. He was 87.

He was a resident of Kasturi Ranga Road.

Kasturi was Editor of The Hindu from September 1965 to January 1991.

He was born on December 17, 1924 and completed his school and college education in Madras. After his M.A. degree he joined the organisation in 1944. In 1959, he was designated Joint Editor.  (more…)

Award function at Mylapore Fine Arts Club

Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Triplicane organised an award function at Mylapore Fine Arts Club, Mylapore on evening of Sep.16.

Nalli Kuppusswami Chetti conferred the title ‘Nataka Kalasarathy’ on ‘TV’ Varadharajen and gave Life Time Achievement award to T. S. Anandhi.

Jaya Arunachalam presided over the function.

The play ‘Athershtakkaran’ was then staged.


Madras Youth Choir pays tribute to writer R. Chudamani

Madras Youth Choir (MYC) paid a musical tribute to the memory of Tamil writer-painter-philanthropist R. Chudamani on the second death anniversary.

It was organised under the auspices of the R. Chudamani Memorial Trust, the event, “Remembering Chudamani”, on September 16 at the Ramakrishna Mission Students’ Home, Mylapore.

The programme was presided over by Dr. V. Irai Anbu, I.A.S, along with Dr. K.S. Subramanian, one of the founding members of MYC and a former student of Ramakrishna Mission Students’ Home.

Chamber music concert

Brindavan Chamber music concert was held on evening of Sep15.

Inauguration vocal concert was performed by Suguna Varadachari. She was accompanied by R. Hemalatha at violin and K. Ashok at mridangam. Vocal support by Vidya Kalyanaraman and Aishwarya Shankar.
