Elders day celebrations at War Widows Welfare Association

War Widows Welfare Association, R. A. Puram celebrated Elder’s Day in its premises on Oct.10.

Around 50 elders including men and women of the Association, Vishranthi, an old age home at Palavakkam participated in these celebrations.

MM. Rajendran, former Governor of Orissa was the chief guest. The President Savitri Vaidi and Vice President Susheela Rajendran were also present. (photo middle left).

Madras Youth Choir invite school students to join its choir

Madras Youth Choir  (MYC) was founded by late M.B. Srinivasan, a well-known music director and a pioneer in Indian Choral Music.

The Choir has started the sub junior category. This is open for children of the age groups 6 to 9.

Children will be trained in the art of choral music singing.

Classes will be held at Children’s Garden School, Mylapore.

MYC is also open for admission to its Junior Group - 10 - 15 years group.

Adults and collegians who wish to join the Senior Choir can also contact MYC.

Obit: Adayapalam Rangaraja Dikshithar

Adayapalam Rangaraja Dikshithar passed away on Sept.30. He was 105 years old.

He was a longtime resident of Mylapore. He studied Sanskrit and Vedas at Madurai.

He lost his vision at 90 but continued to draw out horoscopes with nakshathra as the only detail, says a friend.

He had an accident in 2007and was bedridden ever since.

He is survived by his son Sairam. The family can be reached at 19, Kesavaperumal Sannadhi Street, Mylapore.


Alumni meeting of P. S. High School

The alumni association of 1972 SSLC batch of P. S. High School will be celebrating its 40th anniversary celebrations on Oct.2 at 4 p.m. at school's auditorium.

11 retired teachers will be honoured on the occasion. S. Ve. Shekhar, former Mylapore MLA and actor, C.V. Narasimhan,IPS (retd) former DGP will participate.

Medical camp at Abhiramapuram

Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations in the neighbourhood

Grand celebrations were held everywhere on the occasion of Vinayaka Chathurthi in the neighbourhood.

Navakalasa Snapana pooja and Ganapathi homam was held at Sri Siddhi Buddhi Sametha Sri Karpaga Vinayagar Temple. 108 herbs were used for this homam.

Sweet pongal was distributed to people who visited Sri Adrishta Vinayagar Temple in West Circular Road.

Vegetable rice was distributed here in the afternoon.

Dance festival at BVB

South Zone Cultural Centre, Govt. of India is organising Nrithya Bharatham, a dance festival. It will be inaugurated at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on September 17 at 6.30 p.m.

Music competition on Purandaradasar krithis

Sri Purandaradasar Baktha Samajam, Kodambakkam is conducting a vocal music competition on Purandaradasar krithis for 7 to 22 years.

The preliminary competition will be held on October 14 and final round of competition on October 28. Registration is on between 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Customers meet at Indian Bank

T M Bhasin, Chairman and Managing Director, Indian Bank interacted with the customers at the Customers’ Meet held at Mylapore branch.

Loans were distributed to various beneficiaries. As part of corporate social responsibility, spectacles to senior citizen customers were also distributed on the occasion.

The Bank organised customers’ meet in all its branches across the country on Aug.30, as a part of Founder’s Day celebrations.

Festival of St.Thomas begins on June 29

The annual festival of St. Thomas will be held at the National Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica from June 29 onwards.

The fest will begin with flag hoisting on June 29 at 6. 15 a.m.

A special Holy Mass will be held at evening at 6 p.m.

Car procession will be held on July 7. There will be a solemn High Mass by Arch Bishop Rev. Dr. A. M. Chinnappa on the same day.

The fest concludes on July 8.

Re-union of 1982 batch of Rosary Matric School

About 30 students of the 1982 batch from Rosary Matriculation Higher Secondary School has a get together on June 11.

The group met up for lunch at The Residency, T. Nagar.

"All of us were residents of Mylapore when we were students, " said one member.

"The joy and happiness could not be contained and the restaurant was just a scream." It was also a time to walk down memory lane, to talk about times spent in the Rosary classrooms and on campus and to let the hair down a bit.

Obit: S. Ramesh

S. Ramesh, age 51 passed away on June 2. He was a long time resident of Mylapore.

He was the son of K. Soundararajan and Dhanalakshmi.

He was a student of Vivekananda College and worked at Trans Tempo (P) Ltd as a senior manager.

The temperature continues to hover in the 40s.

Today, the summer heat waves began to hit you as your travelled on bikes or in autos as early as 11 in the morning.

Even the busy mada veedhis around Sri Kapali Temple were deserted after 1 p.m. A pandal erected outside Sri Velleeswarar Temple on South Mada Street created an oasis of shade under which hawkers had some respite from the suffocating heat.

Abhirampuram Police arrest chain snatchers

The Abhiramapuram Police has arrested two men for a series of chain snatching in Mylapore, Abhiramapuram and Foreshore Estate.

Vinod Kumar alias Vinod and Ajayan alias Chotta were arrested here on Sunday.

Police sources says that they were experts in breaking open locks and have jointly committed several crimes including an attempt to murder in Mylapore.

The police is to recover 30 sovereigns of gold jewelley valued at Rs.6 lakhs.
