Elders day celebrations at War Widows Welfare Association

War Widows Welfare Association, R. A. Puram celebrated Elder’s Day in its premises on Oct.10.

Around 50 elders including men and women of the Association, Vishranthi, an old age home at Palavakkam participated in these celebrations.

Madras Youth Choir  (MYC) was founded by late M.B. Srinivasan, a well-known music director and a pioneer in Indian Choral Music.

The Choir has started the sub junior category. This is open for children of the age groups 6 to 9.

Children will be trained in the art of choral music singing.

Classes will be held at Children’s Garden School, Mylapore.

MYC is also open for admission to its Junior Group - 10 - 15 years group.

Teppam at Sri Adi Kesava Perumal Temple

The Annual Teppam utsavam kicked off at Sri Adi Kesava Perumal Temple on Feb 4 evening.

The chitrakulam tank was lit with colourful serial lights.

On the first day (Feb 4), the teppam took place for Sri Adi Kesava Perumal and Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi.

Vijayadasami celebration at playschool

Mahima Cultural Center, preschool and playschool located in Mylapore celebrated vijayadasami by organising akshara byasam (rice writing) ceremony for its school children.

The children sat on their parents laps and wore on the nellu (rice).

Scouting camp for Bharat Scouts and Guides

The South Madras (Chennai) Bharat Scouts and Guides, Mylapore had organised a scout and guides pioneering camp at Besant Scout Camping Centre.

Students were guides in knotting, lashing and tent pitching session. In the evening students participated in the campfire and presented songs and dramas.

C. R. Anand a resident of Mylapore passed away on Sept.6 He was 67 years.

Anand was born and brought up in Mylapore. He did his school at P. S. High School. After his PUC he joined State Bank of India.

He retired as the Deputy Manager from SBI.

Monsoon sets in, streets flood, trees collapse

The monsoon broke out this past week. And neither Chennai Corporation nor Metrowater has prepared the neighbourhood to face it.

The evidence was on the roads and streets. Water-logging.

The photo on left was taken in Vishwespuram, Alwarpet.

Further, the sloppy, half-done or abandoned stormwater drains worsened the condition.

The second photo is of an avenue tree which collapsed on C. P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet. Its root system was severely damaged when the drain-relaying work was undertaken.

Inauguration of music system at Abhiramapuram temple

Sri Ranga Mannar Samedha Shri Lakshmi Narasimhar Sannidhi Temple, at Bheemanna Mudali Street had organised a violin concert on September 5.

Vaadhiya Sangamam, a violin concert was presented by Kandhadevi S. Vijayaraghavan in the evening at the temple.

Videographing of kolus entered for Mylapore Times contest ends today

The weekend may have been a long, wet holiday for Mylaporeans but for photographer R Saravanan it has been a tough one.

Saravanan is videographing the kolus of all the families who registered for the Mylapore Times' annual cointest, revived this year.

Over 115 families signed up and Saravavan and his team has had to battle downpours, potholed roads and crowded streets to get to each house, shoot a 15 seconds video and move on.

St. Bede’s Anglo India Higher Secondary School, Santhome, organised a felicitation program for India cricketer Baba Aparajith.

Aparajith is a past pupil of this school. He was one of the members in the India team, which won the Under-19 World Cup.

The school had a special programme in the school premises during the morning Assembly on September 3.

Prakash Cultural Heritage Research Centre  celebrated its 14th anniversary on Feb.5 at Ramana Kendra Mylapore.

This was the finale of Abhang classes conducted free, from December 2011 by the organisation.

The centre was established in Feb.1999 and has conducted 37 music courses.

Tanker lorry kills local teenage boy

Satish Kumar (16), a resident of Nochikuppam was run over by a tanker lorry. The incident took place on September 7 at about 1.30 p.m. at road along Marina Beach.

The boy was cycling to work on the service road behind San Thome Church, when the bicycle slipped and he fell on the road. A tanker lorry which was speeding from Adyar ran him over.

Locals in the area assaulted the lorry driver and hurled stones on the vehicle. The driver, Ilayaraja was taken into custody.

Pandit T. A. Arunachalam, a retired Thamizh teacher of P. S. High School, North passed away on February 14 in Chennai at the age of 90.

He was a resident of Mylapore and his passion was teaching Sanskrit and the Vedic studies.

He is survivd by his wife, Meenakshi, two daughters, Shanti and Sharada and a son, A Sreenivasan.

High Court directs hundial collection counting at Velleeswarar Temple

Counting the cash dropped into hundials by devotees is a routine affair at temples. But the count at Sri Velleeswarar Temple on Mylapore's South Mada Street on Wednesday was mandated by the Madras High Court.

The Chennai Corporation council has decided to contract the Hyderbad-based Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited to undertake conservancy operations in three zones of the city for the next 7 years.

P. R. Subramanian a longtime resident of Mylapore passed away on July 27 at the age of 79.

After obtaining a diploma in civil engineering he joined Chennai Port Trust and was assigned the project of laying and maintaining railways tracks within the Harbour area. During his tenure he specialised in this field and was responsible for commissioning major expansion schemes in mechanical handling of iron ore and coal projects.

Obit: Adayapalam Rangaraja Dikshithar

Adayapalam Rangaraja Dikshithar passed away on Sept.30. He was 105 years old.

He was a longtime resident of Mylapore. He studied Sanskrit and Vedas at Madurai.

He lost his vision at 90 but continued to draw out horoscopes with nakshathra as the only detail, says a friend.

He had an accident in 2007and was bedridden ever since.

The Madras Youth Choir based in Mylapore is celebrating the first anniversary of its junior choir on August 31.
