Teppam at Sri Adi Kesava Perumal Temple

The Annual Teppam utsavam kicked off at Sri Adi Kesava Perumal Temple on Feb 4 evening.

The chitrakulam tank was lit with colourful serial lights.

On the first day (Feb 4), the teppam took place for Sri Adi Kesava Perumal and Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi.

On the second day (Feb 5), Sri Adi Kesava Perumal and Goddess Andal in rangamannar thirukolam were taken in a procession around the Kesava Perumal Streets. The procession stopped in front of a few houses where devotees offered fruits and camphor.

Srinivasa Avenue Road to be made 'One Way'

Srinivasa Avenue Road, R. A. Puram has now been made one way. This road connects Kamarajar Salai and R. K. Mutt Road.

Entry into this road from Kamarajar Salai has been banned now. Traffic police have erected a 'no entry' sign board here and have a few cops were seen redirecting people.

This road has a school and following many complains about heavy traffic we have decided to try this out, says a policeman here.

They intend to try this out for a week and based on the feed back this road may be made a permanent one way.


Navaratri Heritage Walk on Oct.14

A Heritage Walk down North Mada Street, Mylapore is to be held on Oct.14, Sunday evening.

It is organised by Mylapore Times, the neighbourhood newspaper and Yocee, a web site for children. It starts at 4.30 p.m. and will end by 5.15 p.m.

The Walk aims to show guests on this Walk new and unique dolls of the season which are now on sale by hawkers on this road, the stories behind them and to explore the street culture on the eve of Navaratri.

Chettinad Vidyashram wins swimming championship

Chettinad Vidyashram won the Overall Swimming Championship in the south zone swimming competition held in Oakridge International School, Hyderabad.

Arun Thaneer Malai (Under 16 Boys) won 3 gold medals and 2 silver medals. Shruthi Mahalingam (Under 16 girls) bagged 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal.

In the under 14 category Harish Raj won 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 Bronze medals and Chandru bagged 2 silver medals.

President decorates Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, M. Chandrasekaran with...

Mridangam maestro Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman and Mohan Chandrasekaran, the visually disabled Carnatic violinist, both Mylaporeans were among India's top artistes who were awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship, the highest award for artistes.

President Pranab Mukherjee presented these awards on October 9 at Rashtrapathi Bhavan, Delhi.

Besides the fellowships, 36 eminent personalities and artistes were conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi awards.

Among these was 48-year-old Bharatanatyam dancer Narthaki Nataraj from Mylapore.

Punnai tree compound wall renovated

The compound walls and the grill surronding the Punnai tree at the Punnai Vanathar Sannadhi at Sri Kapalishwarar Temple was renovated recently.

Punnai is the sthala vriksham of the temple.

The temple officials said that Mr. Krishnamurhty undertook the task of renovating the reclining walls.

Rain Centre located at Mandavelipakkam celebrated its 10th year on Oct.8 at its premises.

Ranga Mandira School to celebrate annual day

Ranga Mandira School located at Mandaveli is entering 8th year. This school is run by dancer Swarnamalya Ganesh.

MTC bus kills a motorcyclist on San Thome High Road

An MTC bus, killed a motorcyclist and injured five others on San Thome High Road on morning of Oct.4.

Police said that reckless driving was the cause of the accident.

The motorcyclist Thulasi, a 49 year old from Vadapalani was crushed under the wheels of the bus and died on the spot. His daughter at the pillion escaped with minor injuries.

The driver of the bus Sundarapandian was arrested by the Adyar Traffic Investigation, currently probing the case.

The injured were admitted at Rajiv Gandhi Govt. General Hospital.

Collection of Lord Ganeshas that people treasure Part-3

This is the final part of the feature on people who have unique collections of Lord Ganesha.

Chaya Venkataraman is 45 years old and takes part-time Accountancy tuitions at home.

She has a painting depicting Ganesha with Mushika, written in 16 different names of Lord Ganesha in golden colour. It was a gift from a doctor friend from Ahemdabad.

Renovated showroom of Alliance Company opened

Alliance Company based in Mylapore had opened its renovated premises today, Sept.28.

Union Minister G. K. Vasan inaugurated the showroom.

Present for the occasion was ‘Cho’ Ramaswami, actors Sivakumar, S. V. Sekhar and theater actor T. V. Varadarajan.

Alliance Company is one of the oldest publishing houses in the city. It was started by V. Kuppuswamy Aiyar and is now managed by his grand son V. Srinivasan. The house has now completed 112 years.
